[mə'kliːʃ], Archibald, amerikanischer Schriftsteller, * Glencoe (Illinois) 7. 5. 1892, ✝ Boston (Massachusetts) 20. 4. 1982; Jurist; lebte in den 20er-Jahren als freier Autor in Paris im Kreis der Lostgeneration. Infolge seines politischen Engagements gegen den Faschismus und reger literarischer Tätigkeit wurde er Präsident der League of American Writers; 1939-44 war er Leiter der Library of Congress, 1940-49 in verschiedenen Regierungs-Ämtern tätig und 1949-62 Professor für Rhetorik an der Harvard University. Seine von Melancholie und Skepsis geprägte Versdichtung zeigt Einflüsse E. Pounds, T. S. Eliots und W. B. Yeats' (»The pot of earth«, 1925; »The Hamlet of A. MacLeish«, 1928). Die Sammlung »New found land« (1930) enthält schlichte Naturlyrik über Tod und Vergänglichkeit. Die späteren Werke sind durch die Hinwendung zur Politik bestimmt, so das Versepos »Conquistador« (1932), das Versdrama »Panic« (1935) und das Vershörspiel »The fall of the city« (1937).
